MM very interesting, I notice the College road is very straight, typically Romans built straight roads, I wonder if this is part of Dere Street.
I once read that Dere Street ran from Binchester to Lanchester, chester being the Roman word for Fort or camp. In tne Deerness valley area it turned at an angle and headed off to Lanchester. It ran over the hill at the rear of Esh Winning Colliery. I look forward to the results of the excavations which are to start in the near future at Lanchester. The Roman remains are clearly visible still on the road to Satley.
