I started work at Chilton Colliery in 1944. I left in 1948 to volunteer for service in the R.A.F. I eventually arrived back in Durham and was employed as an Ambulance Driver-Attendant at the H.Q. Depot, Framwellgate Moor. Bobby Alderson was our Head driver. I remember him with affection. He was a highly organised man who ran our Depot with great efficiency. I remember this area well.  As a child up to the age of eight years I lived at 29 Harvey Street, New Brancepeth.  I attended St Josephs school in Ushaw Moor and in the summer we walked to and from school.
